Cavitated Conglomerate Mass in Silicosis Indicating Associated Tuberculosis
نویسندگان
چکیده
Silicosis is the most common occupational lung disease worldwide. It leads to respiratory impairment and may have associated infections that decrease pulmonary function. We describe the case of a 55-year-old man with chronic silicosis who presented with hemoptysis and a cavitated conglomerate mass. The final diagnosis was silicotuberculosis.

Ischaemic Cavitation in Conglomerate Silicosis.
The most common cause of cavitation in progressive massive fibrosis (PMF) in patients with silicosis is infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis. However, cavitation of PMF as a result of ischaemic necrosis has also ben identified as a rare entity in silicosis. A 40-year-old male, non-smoker, working as a stonecutter for 30 years presented with a five years history of exertional breathlessness...

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the radiological characteristics of conglomerate masses using high-resolution computed tomography of the chest. METHODS From among the patients treated between 1986 and 2004 at the Antonio Pedro University Hospital, 75 patients with silicosis and massive fibrosis, most working in the field of sandblasting, were selected for study. These patients were submitted to a clini...

Indeed, immediately upon bronchoscopy with transbronchial biopsy, there was expectoration of abundant melanoptysis. Three days later, the chest radiograph showed a cavity and the patient again coughed up black material, in th...
